Mu Alpha Theta
Math Honor Society
The National Mathematics Honor Society recognizes high-achieving students who demonstrate excellence in mathematics, leadership, and a commitment to academic growth. Membership celebrates dedication to rigorous study while encouraging students to apply their skills in meaningful ways both inside and outside the classroom.
Criteria for Acceptance
- Completion of at least three years of Regents Level Math: Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2.
- An overall unweighted math average of 90 or above, including Regents Exam scores.
- Submission of a 400–500-word essay on a mathematician of your choice, highlighting their contributions to modern mathematics.
Member Responsibilities
- Attend all Honor Society meetings and school functions throughout the year.
- Participate in Math Team competitions held after school and contribute to peer tutoring initiatives.

Dual-Enrollment College Course: Partnered with Molloy University, the Mathematics Department provides mathematically talented students with the unique opportunity to simultaneously earn both high school credit and transcripted college credit. Upon payment of Molloy University's tuition charges and satisfactory completion of the course, students earn three transcripted undergraduate credits in mathematics.
Advanced Placement (AP) Opportunities in Mathematics: The Hicksville Mathematics Department offers a robust selection of college-level Advanced Placement (AP) courses designed to challenge motivated, high-achieving students. Enrolling in an AP course provides an excellent predictor of college success, builds advanced analytical skills, and offers students the opportunity to earn valuable college credit and/or advanced standing prior to high school graduation. Students can pursue college-level pathways across three distinct mathematical disciplines:
- AP Calculus AB & BC: Designed for students with high mathematical ability, these courses delve deeply into differential and integral calculus. AP Calculus BC functions as an accelerated program that expands upon the AB curriculum to cover additional advanced calculus topics.
- AP Statistics: This course introduces students to the major concepts and tools used for collecting, analyzing, and drawing meaningful conclusions from data. It can be taken as a standalone advanced course or concurrently with Pre-Calculus.
- AP Computer Science: Emphasizing object-oriented programming methodology, this course concentrates on advanced problem-solving and algorithm development equivalent to a first-semester collegiate computer science course. (Note: This course acts as a department elective and does not satisfy the three-year state math requirement).
